What is mahjong?

Mahjong is a tile game from 19th-century China. It uses 144 tiles with characters, circles, bamboo, and honor tiles. The standard game has four players.

Each player draws and discards tiles to make a winning hand. It shares some similarities with rummy—except this game uses tiles and requires much more strategy.

The game is now a social staple in the United States. Whether you play the classic version or a more American style, mahjong is about friends and tiles. Many people choose to host regular gatherings with a consistent group, getting their community together for recurring game nights.

How many people do you need for a mahjong party?

The standard game is played with exactly four players. That said, a mahjong party often includes more than four people. Hosts set up multiple table so guests can all play at once, or one table where players rotate in between socializing or snacking. This makes four to eight guests a comfortable range for a casual home gathering.

For larger mahjong socials, like club events or fundraisers, run multiple tables at once. Plan for four players per table. Add a few extra guests as alternates or to rotate in. A few things to sort out before you send your mahjong party invitations:

  • How many tiles sets do you have? One set supports one table of four.
  • Do guests know the rules, or will you need time to teach? Factor that into your timing.
  • Is this a drop-in format or a structured game night with set start and end times?

Getting a firm headcount by RSVP before the event makes planning much easier. That is where Evite’s real-time RSVP tracking helps.

How do you host a mahjong party?

A mahjong party succeeds or fails based on two things: the setup and the guest mix. Here's how to get both right.

Before you send the invite:

Settle on a format first. A casual home game night with four to six regulars feels different from a larger mahjong social. A larger mahjong social needs multiple tables.

Know what type of event you’re hosting before you fill out your mahjong party invitation. Guests will have questions. “Come play mahjong, details TBD” won’t build much anticipation.

The logistics:

  • Get one mahjong set per table of four players. If you're running multiple tables, confirm you have enough sets ahead of time. See if any guests have sets and are willing to bring them.
  • A sturdy, four-top table works fine; a dedicated mahjong table is ideal but not required.
  • Use Evite's event sign-ups feature to coordinate who's bringing what: snacks, drinks, extra tile sets, score cards. It keeps the planning out of the group chat and in one organized place.

The atmosphere:

Mahjong nights tend to have a built-in social rhythm: tiles shuffling, light conversation, good food nearby. Lean into it. Keep snacks within reach of the table.

Finger foods work best. Keep drinks easy to access to avoid interrupting gameplay.

Keep background music low. Players should be able to hear the tiles and each other.

The invite itself:

Send your mahjong party invite two to three weeks ahead for a casual game night. Send it four to six weeks ahead for a larger social or club event. Include if you will be playing American or traditional Chinese mahjong.

Share the expected start and end times in your invitation. Also share what guests should bring to the event, if anything. For new players, it's helpful to send a quick rundown on how to play the game.

How do you send a mahjong party invitation?

Sending a mahjong party invitation on Evite takes just a few minutes. Here's how it works:

Browse the Mahjong Invitations gallery and pick a design that fits your event. Choose from our selection of free or Premium templates. Premium unlocks custom backgrounds, envelopes, stamps, and animated effects.

Once you've chosen your design, fill in the details: event name, date, start and end time, and location. Add a note about which mahjong style you’re playing. Also share anything guests should know before they arrive.

Then use Evite’s event sign-ups feature to plan contributions, like snacks, drinks, and extra tile sets.

From there, getting it out to your crew is straightforward:

  • Via email. Enter guest email addresses individually or import a list; each guest receives the invitation directly in their inbox.
  • Via text. Add phone numbers to your guest list and send via text; guests can RSVP from their phones.
  • Via shareable link. Generate a link and drop it wherever your group lives: a group chat, a neighborhood app, a club email thread, etc.

All three methods send data to your event dashboard, so you can track RSVPs in one place. Automated reminders go out to all guests. Hosts can schedule additional reminders or message the guest list directly as the date gets closer.

Ready to get the tiles shuffling? Find your design in the Mahjong Invitations gallery and send your mahjong party invite today. Hosting a broader game night? Browse Game Night Invitations for more designs across every kind of tabletop gathering.
