What is Diwali?
Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an important Hindu celebration that represents the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. Diwali is celebrated in different ways across families and traditions, but the occasion is commonly marked by lighting lamps, decorating homes, exchanging sweets, and gathering for prayers.
When is Diwali celebrated?
Diwali follows the Hindu lunar calendar, so it does not necessarily fall on the same date every year. It typically takes place during the months of October or November, on the darkest new moon night (known as Amavasya) of the month of Kartika.
What are common ways to celebrate Diwali?
During Diwali, families decorate their homes with oil lamps (diyas), candles, and colorful rangoli designs at the entrance.
People may also clean and brighten their houses to welcome prosperity and invite blessings from Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.
Communities celebrate with festive meals, exchanging sweets and gifts, and wearing new or traditional clothing. The nights are filled with fireworks and lights, creating a joyful atmosphere that brings people together.
