5 Cool New Year’s Eve Outfits You're Gonna Want to Copy ASAP

Collage of New Year's Eve outfit ideas.

Written by Jennifer Heilbron

If someone waved a magic wand and asked if I could choose to be anywhere, doing anything on New Year’s Eve, I would say at a sprawling chateau in France with 100 of my closest friends, decked in exquisite clothes drinking the finest of fine champagne. Basically, picture Great Gatsby but with Instagram for proof of coolness. But alas, there are no magic wands being waved in my face granting me fairy tales like New Year’s Eve plans—unless you consider me tripping over one of my sons’ baseball bats as being similar.

While sweatpants and a 9pm viewing party of the ball dropping is the most likely scenario for this gal, there’s always a chance we could have actual New Year’s Eve plans. In an effort to give my yoga pants a break and start the New Year off feeling chic and put together, I’ve rounded up some fab looks for NYE.

Metallic Skirt + Top

Right now, we’re seeing a huge trend of pairing metallic skirts with subtle, soft, and simple cashmere crew necks. I love this look paired with a pop of color on the foot and a gorgeous clutch for a night at an upscale restaurant or supper club.

Leather Pants + Top

My motto: You can never have too much black in your wardrobe. Feeling blah: Throw on black with a heel. Feeling tired: Throw on black with a bright red lipstick. Feeling bloated: Black is your best friend! Leather pants, a simple crew neck sweater and a strappy heel is a simple, yet elegant way to bring a little edge to your NYE plans.

Sequin Blazer + Jeans

How chic is a drapey, oversized sequin blazer with a baggy, straight pair of jeans and a heel with a sharp point? I love the idea of buttoning the blazer and leaving the chest area bare with a peekaboo lace bra if you dare. This would be perfect for a night out with a few couples or at a house party that isn’t quite cocktail but not a full-blown “Can we just wear our sweatpants?” vibe either.

Sequin Skirt + White Button-Down

Can you tell I’m having a sequin moment?! If we get invited out (friends, do you sense my FOMO building up here?), this would be the look I would gravitate toward. There’s something super sexy but understated with a sequined pencil skirt paired with a crisp white button-down. Tuck in, or leave open with a few buttons open at the top and the bottom and a bold metallic shoe, and you will look like you invented the world of fashion!

Fancy PJs

Going to a house party with all your girls, husbands and kids in tow? Why not coordinate and step up your PJ party game with matching pairs of satin pajamas with feather trim. You could pair it with rhinestone Mary Janes, which are very on trend and can be worn NYE and beyond, OR to really make a statement, a pair of strappy heels. Best part about this look? You can roll right into bed after the ball drops at 9:05.
