6 disco party themes that will be everywhere this year

Written by Ali Baldwin
Whoever declared that disco was dead really underestimated how much people love mirror balls, because it is 2024 and disco is THRIVING. What’s more, disco is no longer just a ’70s-themed party staple—it’s an ever-evolving party aesthetic that’s giving other party themes a high-energy, fresh-yet-timeless twist.
From Roaring ’20s Gatsby bashes to hit-the-dancefloor Saltburn-inspired soirées, you can incorporate a little (or a lot of) disco glamour into your party. Here are the top 6 disco parties you need to know and throw! (BTW—Evite has tons of disco invitations ready to get your party started, and you can find all of the decor and supplies you need to bring your party to life on Amazon.)
Saltburn-themed disco party

Of COURSE, we’re still talking about Saltburn. Given that seemingly everyone was asking each other, “Have you watched it yet? DO NOT WATCH IT WITH YOUR FAMILY” during the 2023 holiday season, there’s no way this party theme is going to die off anytime soon, unlike the {spoiler alert} Catton family. Think old money vibes, gold accents, dim candle-lit elegance and accessories that are the outfit (antlers and angel wings are musts). The disco twist: Hang or scatter disco balls near the candles to reflect their glow, coat a pair of antlers with holographic gold glitter (or hang some mini mirror balls from them!), tack up tinsel curtains everywhere and invest in a portable karaoke machine so people can sing their fave disco tunes…or “Rent” by Pet Shop Boys. IYKYK.
Roaring ’20s Gatsby-themed disco party

Gatsby was never a real person—both in the actual book and IRL—but his parties remain legendary and what many of us dream of throwing. They’re peak glamor—feathers and fringe everywhere, black and gold color palettes, chandeliers and champagne, and of course, dancing galore. The disco twist: This is easy thanks to disco and Gatsby both being major proponents of all things shiny and excessive. Fill mirror ball vases with ostrich feathers, hang gold disco balls of various sizes to create a mock chandelier, create a pop-up speakeasy with light-up glassware and place mini LED spotlights in potted plants (the 1920s were just as popular for houseplants as the 2020s) for some extra ambiance.
Barbie-themed disco party

Just like disco, Barbie is iconic. AND, she’s also enjoying a huge surge in popularity that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Barbie-themed parties are taking over every party scene, from kids’ birthdays to bachelorette parties and beyond. She truly is everything, and her influence is everywhere so embrace it! The disco twist: Barbie’s world is all about colorful plasticky artificiality (on the surface), and if you know anything about ’70s fashion, you’ll know that ultra-vibrant polyester and nylon ruled the style scene. So that’s the dress code taken care of. But for the decor, think pink: Pink disco balls, pink glassware and pink tinsel backdrops. Also, grab some mirror ball straws for yet more disco goodness (they can also keep your guests’ lipstick looking perfect).
Cowboy/cowgirl-themed disco party

Judging by the proliferation of disco ball-meets-cowboy hat party supplies out there, this trend is already a massive hit! “Last rodeo” is an especially popular bachelorette party theme, but you can use this top theme for any kind of shindig you want to make shine. The disco twist: Grab some mirrored cowboy hats, mirror balls with tiny cowboy hats on them, rhinestone fringe bandanas, bedazzled cowboy boots and belts and boogie on down.
Neon disco party

Neon is another trend that has come back in a big way (maximalism is very much still the trend). It’s possibly the easiest party trend to marry with disco, so let’s get to it! The disco twist: This theme is more about giving disco a neon twist! Create a neon dance floor, encourage guests to wear neon ’70s clothing and decorate with neon balloons and bright neon lights.
Classic disco party
Keeping it classic and being basic are NOT the same thing. Disco is such an OTT party theme on its own, you can stick to the essentials of it and still throw a party your friends will talk about for years to come. Pick up some essential supplies and decor and curate a playlist that’ll keep your dance floor hotter than Studio 54’s and you’re ready to get down. The disco essentials: A mirror ball, vinyl records for placemats, disco tumbler cups, disco balloons, multicolor lights and groovy, thrifted threads.
