Halloween caramel apples

Spooky caramel apples with black sugar coating.

Guest contributor: Chef Louise Mellor

Difficulty: Medium     Prep Time: 15 min     Total Time: 40 min

Ingredients

For the caramel apples

  • 8 apples
  • Store-bought chewy caramel candies (Werther's is our go-to)
  • 3 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For assembly

  • Decorative lollipop sticks
  • Black sanding sugar
  • Black sprinkles
  • Black plastic spiders (for decoration)
  • Black ribbon (for decoration)
  • Glue dots

Directions

For the caramel apples

  • Thoroughly wash and dry the apples. Skewer them with the lollipop sticks (or plain skewers) and set aside.
  • Place the caramels and heavy cream in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave in 30-second increments, stirring well between each interval. The caramels should be melted and smooth. If caramel consistency is too runny, just let it cool so it will stick better to the apple.
  • Dip the apples into the caramel one at the time, turning the apple to coat it all around. Lift the apple and let the excess caramel run off.
  • Tip: reheat the caramel as needed to get it to the right consistency when you are coating all the apples.

For assembly

  • Fill a bowl with the sprinkles and sugar.
  • Once the apples have set but are still tacky, roll apples in the sprinkles and sugar to coat completely.
  • Adhere a spider or ribbon to straw with a glue dot.
