First of all, congratulations! If you’re a parent-to-be eagerly waiting to meet your new child or a loved one taking on the precious job of hosting a celebration for the growing family, the next few months are going to be magical (and busy!). Whether you’re waiting for your baby to be born into the family or welcoming a new child via adoption, celebrating this milestone moment is a must.

Planning a beautiful baby shower is a lot of fun, but it’s definitely a lot of work. From choosing a baby shower theme, deciding when and where to hold it, sending out invitations and arranging for food, drinks and activities, there are many tasks to check off before the big day. Our comprehensive baby shower checklist notes everything you need to do before you celebrate the little one and parent(s)-to-be so you can stress less and really enjoy the party planning process.

To make things even easier, we recommend downloading the checklist so you’ll have it right on hand throughout planning!

When to hold a baby shower

Traditionally, baby showers are held during the third trimester of pregnancy, usually between the 32nd and 36th week (or 4–6 weeks before the due date). This shower timing allows the expectant parents to discover and share the sex of their baby (unless they're waiting until the birth to be surprised) to possibly guide shower decor and gift registry selections. It also allows for some time to make any necessary preparations for the arrival of the baby after the shower, such as organizing gifts and setting up the nursery.

However, keep in mind that every pregnancy and journey to parenthood is unique, and there may be specific circumstances to consider when choosing the date for the baby shower. Learn more about the best time to hold a baby shower here.

Should I follow this timeline exactly?

Every baby shower is unique, so adjust your timeline accordingly to best suit your party! If you're planning to host a large celebration at a more formal venue, you'll likely want to start planning earlier. If the vibe is more of a backyard baby shower with the fam, you can probably check things off closer to the event. This checklist is just a starting point to guide you in the right direction!
