Plus, we’ve even included a few fun twists on the classic egg hunt you might consider trying out at your party this year!
So without further ado, let’s hop to it!
Location
When planning your Easter egg hunt, one of the most important pieces to figure out is where you’ll be hosting it! Common locations include residential backyards, local parks or on church grounds.
Key things to consider when choosing your location:
- Is there plenty of room?
- Are there ample hiding places?
- Is the space kiddo-friendly?
- Can it accommodate the number of people I’m inviting?
Decor
While the egg hunt is the main event, the way you choose to decorate your space can help create a festive atmosphere for your guests. Consider decorating with springtimey pastels and plenty of animal imagery (hello, bunnies and chicks!). Beyond the egg hunt, you want to give your guests a memorable experience conducive to photo-ops and fun! Try hanging Easter banners indoors, setting up inflatables outside, placing cardboard signs across your lawn or backyard and offering side activities like an Easter-themed ring toss.

Pro tip: Have a snack table!
All that running around might make your kiddos build up quite an appetite! Plus, parents might want something to munch on while the egg hunt participants are hard at work. That’s why it’s often a good idea to set up some sort of snack station at your Easter egg hunt. Arrange a table of small bites and finger foods, complete with on-theme tablecloths and paperware.

Buckets and pails
While some hosts ask guests to bring their own buckets, many hosts decide to provide bags, buckets or pails for Easter egg hunt participants to facilitate the smoothest event. As the kiddos search for eggs, they’re going to need something to hold their bounty—which is where these adorable Easter buckets come in!

Hiding spots
Arguably the most important part of the Easter egg setup process, choosing great hiding spots will make the difference between a good Easter egg hunt and a totally awesome Easter egg hunt. When hiding your Easter eggs, make sure to strike a balance between easy-to-find spots and hard-to-find spots. It’s okay to have a few eggs in plain sight, but they should be balanced with some more challenging hiding spots.
P.S. Make sure to count how many eggs you hide! This will give you peace of mind during the hunt knowing you hid enough for the kiddos and it’ll help you know how many are still hidden when it’s time to clean up!
Clues (optional)
To kick your Easter egg hunt up a notch, consider making it more of a scavenger hunt by creating cryptic clues to go with each egg you hide. First, make a list of all the places you plan to hide your eggs. Think pantry, couch cushions, swingset, mailbox. Then, craft your clues around your chosen locations. And remember, a clue that rhymes is always more fun!
For this option, you’ll probably choose to hide fewer eggs than with a typical Easter egg hunt and encourage the kiddos to work together to find each egg. We recommend hiding 10–15 eggs in total. Otherwise, you’ll be sending your kiddos on quite the wild goose chase!
Note: If weather and space permits, doing an Easter egg scavenger hunt indoors and outdoors opens up so many hiding spot possibilities!
Treasure map (optional)
If you’re really feeling ambitious, consider making your own treasure maps for your Easter egg hunt! This will allow you to get more creative with your hiding spots and adds a fun twist on the classic egg hunt for the kiddos.
Similarly to the scavenger hunt option, you’re gonna want to create a list of all hiding spots ahead of time. Once you’ve decided where you’ll hide your eggs and how many you’ll hide, create a drawing of the space in which you’re having your egg hunt and start marking off egg locations!
And don’t forget to decorate your maps with exciting colors and stickers to give participants an extra fun time and a super cute keepsake.
Pro tip: No need to draw each one by hand! After making your first map, just photocopy it to get the right number of copies for your little guests.
Consider allergies
If any participants in your Easter egg hunt have allergies, you’re going to need to plan accordingly. You can either fill your eggs exclusively with allergy-friendly candies or mark eggs filled with allergen-free candy with a permanent marker or a special sticker.
What to put inside Easter eggs
The most classic Easter egg treats are definitely Easter-themed chocolates like mini eggs and bunnies. That said, it’s also super common to stuff your Easter eggs with any kid-favorite candies that’ll fit or small toys and prizes!
What you put inside your Easter eggs is largely dependent upon where you live, what the weather is like and what you think the kiddos will like! If you’re anticipating a super warm Easter, it might be best to avoid chocolates (nobody wants a melty disaster!) and opt for hard candies, lollipops and miniature toys.

How many Easter eggs you should have
The number of eggs you prepare and hide should be dependent upon the number of children participating in the Easter egg hunt. Generally, you want to have enough eggs for each child to get 10–15 eggs. Remember, some eggs might not be found, so it’s always better to hide more eggs than you think!
