What to write in a baby shower card

Front and inside of a baby shower card.

Gifts and good times sum up the golden recipe for pretty much every baby shower. Watching a loved one prep for a new chapter is always exciting—but, when that new chapter is parenthood, the excitement is through the roof! Baby showers are the perfect outlet for all that pre-baby excitement and, as a baby shower attendee, you’ll be a crucial component of this celebration!

We know you’ll want to make sure you’re showing your support for the guest(s) of honor and expressing your excitement in the best way possible. One of the most common ways to do that is by writing a heartfelt card to the guest(s) of honor. Though it may sound intimidating, baby shower card writing doesn’t have to be hard! We’ve put together this comprehensive guide to walk you through writing baby shower cards. From card etiquette to message inspo, this guide’s got it all.

What to write in a baby shower card

Before we get started, let’s go over a few basic tips for writing and formatting a baby shower card:

Opening address. Make sure to consider to whom you’ll be addressing your card. Is this baby shower focused on the mama-to-be? Or is it a celebration of both parents-to-be? Are you closer with one of the parents? If so, do you want to include a message specifically for them? All of these questions are important to ask yourself before starting your card.

Tone. Make sure the tone of your card corresponds with your relationship to the recipient. The closer you are with the parent(s)-to-be, the more room you have to write a silly joke or offer personal advice. If the recipient of your card is someone you don’t know very well, then it’s best to stick with a more general message of congratulations and well wishes.

Gender. Make sure you word your message in a way that corresponds with the baby’s gender. If the parent(s)-to-be have already announced their baby’s gender, then it’s totally fine to include gendered language about the baby boy or baby girl in your card. If they haven’t announced their child’s gender or you’re not 100% certain, it’s best to err on the side of caution and choose gender-neutral language. We’ve put together lists of baby shower card message ideas for all three scenarios below.

Short & sweet. No need to go overboard with the congrats! Remember, parent(s)-to-be are busy, busy, busy and will already be grateful for your card. However, if you are very close with the parent(s)-to-be, then a slightly longer message might be more fitting.

Sign-off. Last, but not least, make sure to end your card with a sign-off that makes sense given your relationship to the guest(s) of honor. Here are a few examples with a warm and friendly tone:

Love,

All the best,

Warmly,

Lots of love,

Best wishes,

Hugs and kisses,

Your friend,

With love,

Signing a book as a baby shower card

In addition to gifts from the expecting parents’ registry, beloved children’s books are a common baby shower gift. Make sure to check out our list of children’s books perfect for gifting at a baby shower to find the perfect book for the parent(s)-to-be and their little one.

When gifting a book, consider writing a short message on the inside cover instead of giving a separate card. Here are a few examples to help inspire you, but make sure to write a message that feels heartfelt, honest and relevant to the book you’re giving.

  1. "May this book be the first of many magical adventures you'll embark on together. Wishing you a lifetime of reading, learning and imagination."
  2. "As you turn the pages of this book, may your little one's world expand with curiosity and endless possibilities. Happy reading!"
  3. "May this book be a constant reminder of the love and care that surrounds you. May it bring you comfort, laughter and a lifelong love for reading."
  4. "This book is a treasure trove of knowledge and imagination. May it be the beginning of your little one’s lifelong love of books!"
  5. “May you always find solace and joy within the world of storytelling!"
