Illustrator Rongrong DeVoe’s art can be found in fashion magazines, top beauty brands and now, on Evite! Read more about her journey as an illustrator (did you know she used to be a game designer?) and expect to get inspired to pursue your passions.

What inspired you to become an artist?

I have always wanted to be an artist. I started drawing when I was a kid and continued all the way through college. It's the ONE thing I am passionate about and love to do every day.

Which three words describe your design aesthetic?

Chic, fun and colorful.

What inspires your work?

Fashion, travel and women empowerment.

When you have a creative block, what pulls you out of it?

Draw anything that comes to my mind without too many thoughts and meaning behind it.

What is your proudest moment as an artist?

Having a community of people that love my art and knowing my work makes them feel inspired and empowered.

What advice would you give to an aspiring creator?

Start sharing your art, don't let yourself and a few others stop you! Believe in yourself even if no one else is cheering you on!

What excites you the most about your collaboration with Evite?

It's a well-known brand! I used Evite myself for my son's birthday invitation!

Fashion illustration is a huge part of your work. What inspired you to pursue that path?

I used to collect Vogue magazine when I was a teenager. I have always loved fashion and wanted to draw for fashion when I grew up.

Fashion illustration obviously exists well beyond fashion magazines and catalogues. Why do you think people are so drawn to these images?

It's the storytelling. People love to interpret the illustrated man/woman and his/her story behind it.

Is there a quote, mantra or motto that comes to your mind when you work?

Let me put my own magic to this project!

You’re originally from Qingdao, China, and worked in Shanghai for a while. Are there any influences or things you learned there that you incorporate into your work now?

I used to be a game designer, so I think being able to create characters that tell a story is something I bring into my current work.

What differences and similarities have you experienced as an artist working in China and the United States?

Similarities working in China vs. the U.S. are that you need to hustle and work hard to be successful! Creativity is valued more in the U.S. than in China, at least when I lived there 12 years ago.

In addition to moving from Shanghai to New York City, you’ve also made the move from NYC to Houston, Texas! With many people now relocating to new places both within the U.S. and globally, what advice would you give to someone considering making a big move?

Follow your heart, keep an open mind, find a few people who support you and cheer you on! It's scary and exciting at the same time. But there are also more opportunities ahead!

Artist Rongrong DeVoe is a new mom and a full-time artist/small business owner living in Houston, TX. She moved from China to the U.S. a decade ago to pursue her dream to be an artist! She is passionate about creating art to empower women and celebrate diversity. Her art has been featured in Vogue, Forbes and Instyle. Her clients include Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Maybelline NY.
