The Scene A far cry from its dive days as J. Sloans, this renovated cocktail lounge has been retro-fitted in Rat Pack-era cool with zebra, blue, pink color schemes, plush booths, intimate lighting and a top-shelf bar. The building's original stairway leads up to two glass-encased rooms with flat-screen TVs, slick wood floors and sloping chairs. DJs spin everything from swing to soul, while live jazz bands entertain on Sundays. The leisurely atmosphere lures young professionals and flamboyant artists from the nearby Pacific Design Center.
The Draw There's definitely some swagger here, but surprisingly little attitude. The classy-yet-freewheeling vibe combined with the absence of a guest list or cover charge makes it ideal for grabbing an after-work drink, romancing a date or catching the game on the bar's pull-down screen. |
Insider Tips The weekday happy hour from 5pm to 8pm features discounts on specialty drinks, like the Monroe cosmo with Ketel One Citron vodka, fresh lime, triple sec and cranberry.
A limited number of metered spaces on Melrose are free after 8pm. Otherwise, the library lot on San Vicente is free after 5pm, or use the Bodhi Tree valet for $3.50.
