With each Spring comes a new vigor for planting veggies in the garden. Now more than ever we've become aware of the importance of local food sources. What's more local than your own yard!?
But how to do it?
I often find that I'm rich in extra seeds from my yearly garden but sometimes poor in information and wishing for the shared knowledge of a community. In our neighborhood we have composters and chicken owners and veggie growers and garden attempters. ;-) Let's get our heads together!
Come one, come all if you:
- Live nearby (there's a reason for this! - Let's say "Crestview, Brentwood, Wooten, Highland") - Have or want veggie seeds - Have or want veggie knowledge - Want to connect with members in the community who want to create a vibrant local food source network
Please bring:
- A folding stool/chair - Seeds - labled and ready to share (it's nice to create extra labels so people can just grab one when they take some seeds) - Baggies, Sharpies etc. to label and take your seeds home - Resources and knowledge on growing veggies and other support systems (compost, chickens, water collection, pest/weed control, etc.) - If you don't have seeds, maybe bring a snack and a notebook to write what you've learned!
Logistics:
- This is an outdoor garden party provided it's not raining or below 60 degrees, otherwise we will pick a different day!
- Children are welcome. Please be prepared to oversee them. They are free to run around, and I have bunnies and some toys, but I do have dangerous objects sitting around (children have a way of finding things I've lost in the grass like scissors! ;).
- Pets on leash who get along with children and other pets are ok.
I have lots of lettuce varieties and some other veggies. I'm also bringing lots of flower and herb seeds since I have so many I can't use them all. And I have lots of brown paper squares to make seed envelopes for anyone who needs them.
I'll bring sugar snap pole peas, Nantes carrots and Bloomsdale Long-standing spinach - perfect for planting right now. I also have some Rouge vif d’etemps french pumpkin harvested from the yummy pumpkin we got through our CSA share last year. It probably won't be reliable, but might be worth a shot.
I am excited as growing food year long is my newest interest and I haven't exactly figured out the tricks--(or has the drought made it particularly hard in this first year)
What a Great Idea Paige, Thanks so much for organizing this. I'm looking forward to learning about growing my own food, since I'm still a wanna-be. And at the risk of sounding pessimistic, I think in the very near future we'll have no other choice.
I am in Renton, if anyone wants to car-pool.
I live outside the area mentioned but will be moving to the Austin area soon. Otherwise--would love to connect up! Knoweldge and seeds exchanged are all great!
This sounds really neat, but I won't be able to make it due to other obligations. I would love to get together with fellow gardeners in the future, though!
