Lesley Gilb Taplin was tragically killed in a traffic accident on highway 101 in Los Angeles on the night of April 13th. For the last decade of her life she was passionately involved as a volunteer with many downtown Los Angeles organizations. We will be gathering in the heart of that community to celebrate her remarkable life, and we hope you can join us.

We have arranged for you to obtain discounted rates at one of the two hotels within walking distance of Vibiana (www.vibianala.com) as follows:

1-- Closest to Vibiana is:
Kyoto Grand Hotel & Gardens
120 S. Los Angeles
Los Angeles, CA 90012
(located between 1st and 2nd)
call 888-354-0831 or try this direct link address for our group code (LGTM):

https://reservations.synxis.com/LBE/rez.aspx?Hotel=20154&Chain=538&group=LGTM />
Ask to book your room at the "Lesley Taplin Memorial" rate (or go to http://www.kyotograndhotel.com/hotel/index.html and put LGTM in the group code box in their reservations page).
Your reduced rate =$109 + tax per night for a king or 2 double bed room, including free breakfast. All reservations must be received by April 29.

This hotel is also offering us a discount on parking - 50% off the normal $24 (self) or $30 (valet) per night rate.

If flying in to LAX, a Super Shuttle shared van can be boarded outside at the 2nd curb & can bring you directly to the hotel for $16 per person one way. (800-BLUEVAN or www.supershuttle.com)

2-- the 2nd hotel option is a couple blocks away from Vibiana, & less elegant:
Miyako Hotel Los Angeles
328 East First Street
Los Angeles, CA 90012

They are offering us $89 per night + tax for a room with a king or two double beds. Parking is either valet ($18 + tax per day) or else next door at the LIttle Tokyo Mall (check in and register first at the hotel) for $15.50 per day.

To book at this hotel email edmond@miyakola.com and say you are booking for the "Lesley Taplin Memorial Service" rate. If you have questions, call him directly at 213-330-2800 ext. 338.

For those arriving by car, there is parking across the street from Vibiana at Joe's Auto Park (on the west side of Main). Arrival by train is at Union Station, several long blocks from Vibiana. From there, you can catch a taxi to either hotel or to Vibiana, or walk, as Lesley always loved to do, wherever she lived.

A memorial scholarship fund has been created in Lesley Taplin's name through Art Share Los Angeles in honor of her commitment to the arts and education. For more information contact www.artsharela.org or call 213-687-4278. Tax-deductible contributions made out to "Art Share Los Angeles - Lesley Taplin Fund" can be sent directly to Art Share Los Angeles, 801 E. 4th Place, Los Angeles, CA 90013.

Lesley had so much heart, wisdom, generosity and understanding. I like to think she is still watching over downtown. I know she'll keep inspiring those who knew her to do what we can to make this world a better place.

After losing touch with my best friend in the entire world after I left Berkeley for the "church war" school I attended in Minnesota, I was so excited to be reunited by email and a very special reunion arranged by mutual junior high "bud" Mary Staats just a year or so ago. Now, I am having to face losing this most special person.

I have been living in New Mexico for the last three years but have kept in touch with Leslie. I am very saddened by this terrible news. She was a rare living exemplar, an extraordinary human being--kind, deep, generous, super-intelligent--and tremendous fun to talk with. I will be there.
