Kids' Birthday Party Decoration Ideas
Let the birthday person's preferences be your guide for decorations. What is their favorite color, animal, game, place, TV show? A theme as simple as a color can transform your party place. For example, if you pick blue, decorate with balloons, streamers, and flowers in all shades of blue. Replace your white lightbulbs with blue ones, and hang strings of blue-colored lights from your ceiling.
If you're planning a sit-down meal, let the dining area be your focal point: Use lots of little card tables, cover them with bright tablecloths, and design creative place settings with construction paper and crafting scissors.
If it's sunny and you have outdoor space, plan a picnic. Put up a badminton net, or set up a game of croquet. You can get more or less elaborate depending on your guests' ages and interests.
Kids' Birthday Party Favor Ideas
Mini crayon sets, tiny notebooks, small decks of cards -- these tiny party favors earn big smiles! Add stickers, glow-in-the-dark rubber balls, candy, temporary tattoos, cars and hair barrettes to fill out favor bags. The birthday boy or girl shouldn't be the only person opening gifts -- wrap some of the party favors in festive wrapping paper to add more excitement. If the party has a theme, carry that over to the party favors as well.
Here are some fun party themes for your little one's big day:
Bring the party theme to life with costumes. Kids love to dress up, so create games and activities where they can let their imaginations run wild. Here are some costume essentials to have on hand:
• crazy wigs • all kinds of hats • clown noses and thick glasses • princess dresses • crowns and tiaras | • bunny ears, dog ears, alien ears • formal dresses and men's jackets • hula skirts • fake moustaches and beards • ballerina tutus |
Make a classic game like pin the tail on the donkey more contemporary by substituting different animals for the donkey (pin the wing on the penguin, pin the tentacle on the mysterious giant squid).
Musical chairs never goes out of style either, and it's fun for both children and adults when you spin the right tunes (you'd be surprised at how many kids love bands like the Beatles and the B-52s). Piñatas have cross-cultural appeal and can be stuffed with candy, toys and other party favors.
Bring out your guests' creative sides with crafts. Either choose one craft for everybody to make all together, or split them into groups and let them take turns visiting different stations and making origami, paper airplanes, bead necklaces or keychains. After a set amount of time, or when people start getting restless, rotate each group so everybody gets to try their hand at each craft.
